A purer style

A purer style

The girl in pink, an usher of the bride at a kwanjula, is pinning badges to the guests of the groom. She is wearing a plain cotton material with a plain black sash. Unlike the modern day fashion of peaked shoulders the usher's gomezi is like that of a strapless dress. The original gomezi revealed the shoulders and was a wrap dress made out of bark cloth with no buttons. It has become fashionable to fuse the plain waxed material that originates in West Africa known locally as kitenge or Kikoy (Kenyan cotton pattern) with the old sleeveless style. This style will only be used for ushers or in an elaborate way as a 'changing' gomezi, but the guests will not break from the usual puffed shoulder gomezi.
