Respect for the large lady

Respect for the large lady

The traditional Baganda dress, the gomezi or busuti, accentuates the size of a woman because in Uganda 'Big is Beautiful'. I have had to grit my teeth and smile when someone compliments me by saying ‘you look fat’- I even smile if I can because what the compliment means is that I look good, I’m healthy and that I’ll be respected. Obesity is a sign of prosperity, contentment, and success. Ironically it is also seen as a sign of good health. Many aspire to put on weight and usually a couple marry the community will be measuring their happiness by the waistbands.

A new generation of especially women have become acutely aware of the western fashion to be thin and do not agree with the general view on weight.

In a wonderful way it is nice to see women happy, rather than unhappy with their size and women do look beautiful in a gomezi. Can I say it covers a multitude of sins?

The mothers stand outside the church enjoying the atmosphere, looking ‘smart’ in their glamorous gomezis.
