A Special Hug

01 Sep 2007

A Special Hug

This hug symbolises the acceptance of the groom’s sister for the groom’s fiancé. This is the moment when the bride is officially identified to the crowd at the introduction engagement ceremony (kwanjula). Kneeling symbolises great respect and the flowers held by the sister’s friend will be given to the bride as a token of friendship and welcome from the family of the groom.

Key female figures at a kwanjula such as the bride, the sister of the groom and the ssenga (the paternal aunt of the bride) must choose special conspicuous material, buttons, sashes, jewellery and hair clips for the day. The bride and ssenga will change and they may opt for a different style of gomezi rarely seen on other occasions.
